Passengers on Sao Paulo’s 30-year old Metro Line 3 are now enjoying an enhanced level of comfort and quiet in newly refurbished carriages thanks, in part, to ISOVER Brazil’s CLIMAVER Plus ductwork system.

CLIMAVER Plus is a high density mineral wool duct board with aluminium lining to both faces designed by ISOVER Brazil. It has been used to replace original foam insulated sheet metal air conditioning ducts in all carriages. CLIMAVER Plus provides improved acoustic properties to reduce system noise for travellers. Easier and faster to install, the high performance ducting is also improving air-conditioning system efficiency, saving costs all round for the train operator.

The refurbishment programme, which will also include Metro Line 1 trains, is due for completion by 2014. It will see a total of 98 carriages upgraded to include new air-conditioning and security cameras, as well as completely new and upgraded interiors. The upgraded specification is now also being applied to new carriages built locally at CAF’s new factory in Brazil.

The Sao Paulo programme is the first time that the CLIMAVER system has been used in this way on railway carriages, and the results have been excellent. As a consequence, sustainable power generation and transportation specialist ALSTOM, one of four companies leading the project, is now planning to use the same specification for other similar projects it is undertaking in China and India.
