Fire resistant ducts are the best way to ensure fire safety in HVAC installations as they provide performance from beginning to the end of the duct system life-time. ISOVER provides solutions in ULTIMATE mineral wool for metal ventilation ducts that secure fire resistance as well as meeting thermal and acoustic requirements.

The fire resistance of a building component is a measure of the time during which it is able to fulfil conditions of stability; prevent the passage of flames and flammable gases and minimise the temperature rise of the unexposed face. HVAC ducts can be designed to provide enhanced fire resistance, as required by regulations. This requirement is particularly important where ducts pass through separating walls designed to function as fire breaks, in which case ducts must also be designed with a minimum level of fire resistance.

The most common way to create fire resistant ducts is to insulate metal ducts with a mineral wool that, in addition to thermal and acoustic insulation, provides fire resistance to the duct.

For this application, ISOVER has developed ULTIMATE PROTECT (U Protect), a unique system based on innovative ULTIMATE mineral wool, and other components as screws, glue and paint, which offers:

  • Optimum fire resistance values for duct work
  • Lower weight than other traditional insulation solutions
  • Ease of installation

U Protect can achieve the following fire resistance in ducts:

  • Rectangular ducts - up to 2 hours fire resistance for fires located inside or outside the duct, both horizontally and vertically. The U Protect Slab is used for rectangular ducts.
  • Circular ducts - up to 2 hours fire resistance for fires located inside or outside the duct, both horizontally and vertically. U Protect Wired Mat is used for circular ducts.
